The previous owner did not consider the conditions that communicative and sociable parrots need for a full life.
As they were very noisy he was looking for a new home for them.
We believe they are happy here – they have company, attention, a varied menu, toys, veterinary care, outdoor aviary and indoor heated space.
It is the smallest species of macaw. It has a long narrow tail and a large head with a large, curved beak. The feathers are bright green on the body and bluish on the head. The front edges of the wings, especially on the underside, are red. The area around the eyes up to the beak is white and leathery.
Even such small macaws are playful, active, and very noisy. Macaws vocalise to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify each other. They are very social; they live in pairs and in large flocks. The female incubates the eggs, and the male takes care of the food.
They like open wooded habitats, preferring the presence of palm trees. They can be found in tropical lowlands, savannahs, and swamps.
Although it is a noisy bird that is not suitable for living in an apartment, the red-shouldered macaw can be an excellent pet. If properly socialised, it is usually a gentle, intelligent bird that gets along well with people. Plus, it is a great storyteller who can be taught many tricks. It may be a more suitable pet parrot for those whose homes lack space for a larger parrot, although it does require daily exercise outside its cage and access to an outdoor enclosure for at least part of the year.
