It is the smallest breed of sheep in the world. Rams have rather large horns, sheep are hornless. The wool is most often black or dark brown, but cream and white individuals are rarer.
It is a very undemanding herbivore that grazes even what other sheep would not. In France, their high quality wool is also used, in our country they are most often used for grazing and garden maintenance as very undemanding “live mowers” or as pets.
The female usually gives birth to one young weighing almost 1 kg, which she nurses for half a year. Sheep live a herd-like lifestyle and are mainly active during the day.
This breed is also referred to as the Ushant sheep or more commonly as the Ouessant sheep. Both names are derived from the English name of the island Ouessant. The mistake in the name occurred right after the first import of this breed to the Czech Republic. The clerk who entered the newly imported sheep into the register used a poor quality fax copy of the document where the letter O in the word Ouessant was a bit blurred, so the scribe replaced it with the letter Q.
